Core Characteristics of Organic Pigments

Thanks to their unique molecular structure, organic pigments possess distinct properties that set them apart from inorganic pigments-properties that also determine their applicable scenarios:

 

1. Excellent Color Expression: They exhibit bright colors, high saturation, and an extremely wide color spectrum, ranging from vivid reds, yellows, and oranges to deep blues, greens, and purples. They can even be formulated into special fluorescent or pearlescent colors, meeting the demands for color precision and variety in high-end fields.
2. Strong Tinting Strength: At the same dosage, the coloring effect of organic pigments is far superior to that of most inorganic pigments (e.g., titanium dioxide, iron oxide series). A small amount of addition can achieve the desired coloring concentration, reducing the production cost of downstream products.
3. Low Density: Most organic pigments have a density between 1.0-2.0 g/cm³, much lower than that of inorganic pigments (e.g., iron oxide red has a density of approximately 5.2 g/cm³). This makes them suitable for scenarios where product weight is a concern (e.g., lightweight plastics, films).
4. Significant Differences in Solubility: Most traditional organic pigments are insoluble in water and common organic solvents. However, some special types (e.g., solvent-based organic pigments) can dissolve in specific solvents, adapting to different application processes (e.g., inks, coatings).
5. Relatively Weak Weather Resistance and Heat Resistance: Compared with inorganic pigments (e.g., titanium oxide, chrome yellow), most organic pigments are prone to fading or decomposition under long-term sunlight or high-temperature environments. Nevertheless, through molecular structure modification (e.g., introducing heterocycles, increasing molecular weight), specialized organic pigments with high weather resistance and heat resistance (e.g., phthalocyanine blue, quinacridone red) have been developed, capable of meeting the needs of outdoor and high-temperature processing scenarios.
